Bathroom Lighting

The bathroom is the only room in the home which has strict regulations relating to the type of light fitting which is suitable. To help with decisions of what can be placed where, the room is sectioned off into four separate zones. Each zone is related to the position of the water source (e.g. bath/shower). Fittings are also given what is known as an ‘IP’ rating. This rating is followed by a number, for instance IP44. The higher this number the greater protection against water and moisture. It is always recommended that if you are unsure if about a fitting to consult a qualified Electrician.

Fittings which are suitable are enclosed, usually having a rubber seal between the glass and fitting, making them less permeable to condensation.

With the zone system now in mind you can consider the many different types and style of fitting that are available.

For a modern, clutter free effect, recessed down lights are a popular choice. These are available in different colour finishes and are suitable for zones one, two and three. Another modern style fitting are spotlight bars. These are available with multiple heads which are adjustable, allowing for the light to be directed and light-up dark corners or areas such as sinks.

There is also a wide range of flush fittings available. These are available in a wide range of finishes and are widely used in rooms with low ceilings because of there compact design. Flush fittings are also available with a choice of back plates, with low energy options available. These are a good option if fittings are to be left on for long periods.

Mirrors incorporating lighting and shaver sockets are also popular choices. These are available in different stylish designs, each offering convenience combined with modern flair.

LUMINAIRES FOR BATHROOMS

New legislation has been introduced regarding Luminaries for Bathrooms Section 701 of BS7671 : 2008 (IEE Wiring Regulation) has been revised
and a synopsis is printed below to assist with your choice of Bathroom lighting

ZONE 0
This is the interior of the bathtub or shower tray. We do not supply
luminaries for this zone.

ZONE 1
This is the area directly above the bath or shower tray to a height of 2.25M
above the floor. Protection required is a minimum of IPX4 (splash proof) for
normal domestic use.

ZONE 2
a) This is the area over the bathtub or shower tray above zone 1.
b) This is the area external to zone 1 and extends to a vertical plane 0.6M
external to zone 1 to a height of 2.25M. Protection required is the same as
zone1.

ZONE3

This zone is no longer defined and is just "Outside Zones".  Protection required is IP20 for normal domestic use.

We recommend that you consult a qualified electrician to ensure that the wiring and supply are protected in accordance with the regulations.
The above does not apply to communal baths and showers where jets of water are used for cleaning purposes.
